Week 30Posted at 2010-09-07 14:48:29I think I might have been in a little bit of denial. My second trimester was pretty good: no major problems, a decent amount of energy, overall feeling pretty good. I knew from experience that the third trimester would be different, but it's not like it happens as soon as the clock ticks 27 weeks. Maybe because we've been so busy the last few weeks--with end-of-summer fun, our new baby cousin, getting ready for school, and all that--but I was still feeling fairly good most of the time. This week, the third trimester hit with a vengeance, and all I could do was give in.... Keep Reading

Week 29: Becoming an Aunt!Posted at 2010-09-07 14:47:37Throughout my many weeks of blogging, I've shared the birth stories of all three of my kids, with another one soon to come. But I wasn't used to being on the waiting-for-updates end of a birth. My husband is an only child, and neither of my younger siblings had any kids...until now! This week, I became an aunt!... Week 28Posted at 2010-09-07 14:35:18In addition to my 28-week checkup this week, I had to go in for a two-hour blood sugar test. Rather than drink the sweet orange drink, they test my fasting sugar, then I eat breakfast, and then they test my blood sugar two hours after I eat. To be honest, I went into this appointment with a bit of an attitude problem, since this is essentially what I do to myself at home several times a week. My blood sugar levels depend on what I eat: high protein/low carb = good numbers, high carb = numbers in the danger zone. It's that simple. So when I ate an Egg McMuffin and coffee with sugar-free creamer, I knew there wouldn't be any issues. Too bad I had to give up the better part of a morning and arrange childcare for three kids to find out what I could have told them...oh well.... Keep Reading

Week 27: Growing UpPosted at 2010-08-31 11:01:14I haven't spent much time writing about Jack lately, but in the past month, I feel like I've had the chance to get to know him so much more. At almost 22 months old, his ability to communicate with the outside world is finally catching up with what's going on inside his head. He's finally able to share all his thoughts, feelings, and opinions with us, and it has been a real treat. The more we learn about him, the more fun he gets, and considering what an easy-going kid he's been all along, that's saying something.... Keep Reading

Week 26: Mood SwingPosted at 2010-08-31 10:03:10It's only natural for a pregnant girl to be a bit hormonal at times. My weeping hysteria through much of Toy Story 3, several TV shows, and a few commercials has resulted in much good-natured teasing this summer. This week was worse than just a little stereotypical pregnancy crying though. The you-know-what hit the fan in spectacular fashion, and all my precious family could do was duck and cover.... Week 25: InsomniaPosted at 2010-08-04 15:25:24It seems a little unfair to me that insomnia is a common pregnancy issue. As if we pregnant girls don't need our beauty sleep?! Okay, forget the "beauty" part of it--pregnancy is, at best, mildly tiring, and on the worst days it can wipe you out. So why am I blogging at 4:28 a.m. rather than sleeping? Grrrrr.... Keep Reading

Week 24: Anniversary Getaway and 24-Week Check-upPosted at 2010-08-04 15:23:33
4:18 a.m. Location: Our house. Gracie's voice shatters the early morning silence: "Mom! Dad! Help! I need you!" I haul my pregnant self out of bed and race across the hall. The cause of this alarm: She needs ice water. Not the room temperature cup of water that's on her nightstand--ICE water.

Week 23: Summer Fun & SciaticaPosted at 2010-07-27 10:12:52This week has been a fun one, despite starting to feel some of the aches and pains of pregnancy. We got to spend lots of time swimming and camping, and my big old pregnant self is holding up surprisingly well, as long as I keep moving. It's when I stop and attempt to sit down (or God forbid, try to get back up again!) that I have issues--oh well; you win some, you lose some.... Keep Reading

Week 22: Crazy Pregnant Lady & ConstructionPosted at 2010-07-27 09:49:23
I'm having issues. I know I'm not supposed to eat simple carbs because I don't want to have a dangerously large baby. But simple carbs are soooo yummy. And I'm soooo hormonal. And I made brownies with fudge icing--both from scratch--for a party, and they're calling my name right now because I made the mistake of just trying a bite when people told me how good they

Week 21Posted at 2010-07-13 10:51:42The 21st week of my pregnancy was a very full one: finishing up my summer teaching, Gracie's fifth birthday, my sister's baby shower, and a Fourth of July/birthday party for 20-plus of our closest friends. But who cares about any of that--we had our ultrasound this week! Up till now, the male/female ratio in the house was even: four girls (mommy, daughter, girl cat, girl fish - hey Gracie came up with the tally!) and four boys (daddy, two brothers, boy fish). So we were curious who would "win" when we saw the ultrasound. Looks like we'll have to go get another girl fish to keep things even around here, because Baby #4 is a boy!... Keep Reading

Week 20Posted at 2010-07-01 09:55:36I'm halfway there! Actually, if the boys are any indication, I hit my half-way mark a few days ago, since they were both born right at 39 weeks, but any way you slice it, tomorrow begins the second half of my pregnancy. For the most part, it's a pretty uneventful milestone. Not as exciting as the switch from the first to second trimesters, when I anxiously awaited relief from my nausea and exhaustion. Also not as monumentous as the shift from the second to third trimesters, when you're really starting to get big, and get excited about being in the home stretch.... Keep Reading

Week 19: Coming Home and Heading to WorkPosted at 2010-07-01 09:44:21We took the 1000+ mile trip home from Florida in three days, which allowed us to make a few stops along the way. We visited the Daytona race track for my race car-crazy kids (and their Daddy and Papa), then headed to Savannah, where our hotel had a cool view of container ships and barges coming up the river. We spent another night with family near Charlotte before the final long day of driving, our twelfth day away from home. We were so ready. ... Keep Reading

Week 18: Our Fantastic Florida AdventurePosted at 2010-07-01 09:44:06Well, it wasn't a flawless week, but it was a wonderful and definitely a memorable vacation. We drove 1050 miles from our home in Ohio to Walt Disney World in Florida, with our almost-5, 3 and a half, and 1 and a half year-old kids. Oh yeah, and a four-months-pregnant mommy, who got along surprisingly well in record-setting heat and humidity. That's record-setting for a place that's already hot and humid, so we're talking numbers in the miserable range, but we took afternoon breaks in our air conditioned hotel room each day, and managed to survive the heat.... Week 17: Trip Preparation and Check UpPosted at 2010-07-01 09:17:20T-minus 6 days and counting. This is how my 17th week began, at least in my mind. Count down to what? Our departure for Florida. In a car. With three children. Under five years old. And my in-laws. For twelve days. A lot to wrap my four-months-pregnant brain around. This time next week, we'll be at Disney World, hopefully having a magical time. But right now, it's business time, trying to make sure we have everything we need to make sure the magic stays magical, rather than melting into something unsavory in the Florida heat.... Week 15-16: ChangesPosted at 2010-07-01 09:16:34It's starting to happen again: that feeling that my body is not my own. Instead of just feeling tired and yucky, like I did in the first trimester. I'm becoming increasingly aware that the reason for all these changes is anew person growing in there. Some of the changes, like starting to feel the baby move a few days ago, are wonderful ones. Others, well, there are a few things going on that I don't even want to write about. Let's just say that I laughed a little too hard when Sheldon on the Big Bang Theory offered his overnight house guest a digestion-regulating yogurt, then commented on its lack of effectiveness the following morning when she didn't use the restroom at her scheduled time. Is that specific enough without being too gross? I'm trying to get enough fiber while counting my carbs, but some weeks are better than others. That, coupled with the fact that low-fat cheese doesn't have any carbs, but helps fill my tummy, well, let's just say there have been issues. There hasn't been this much excitement about someone making a #2 around here since Max got potty trained.... Keep Reading
