In recent celebrity news, there has been talk about Beyonce’s public breastfeeding. While at an upscale restaurant, Beyoncebreastfed her newborn daughter at her table. Some people were appalled by her doing so. One man said she should have breastfed her daughter in the bathroom. I thought, How silly! When is the last time he had a meal in a restroom? A public one, at that.
All of this talk made me think about where I would breastfeed my soon-to-arrive daughter. The truth of the matter is that no sensible parent would want to deny their child food when she is hungry. However, I also don’t want to be the talk of a restaurant due to publicly feeding my hungry child. I am not uncomfortable with breastfeeding publicly, with the proper covering. However, I realized how uncomfortable the general public is with breastfeeding. Why is this so taboo? Do people not realize the benefits breastfed babies receive? Do people realize how frequently babies need to eat?
I spoke to my husband and asked him what his thoughts were regarding breastfeeding in public. He simply said, “If Taylor’s hungry, you have to feed her.” Though I already knew this and the answer didn’t require me to have the knowledge of a rocket scientist; his comment really put things into perspective. Once Taylor is here and crying for food, I’m sure I won’t give the setting of her feeding much thought.
Is there any place you wouldn’t breastfeed your child? Are you pro public breastfeeding or against it? Post your thoughts. I would love to read your perspective.
